Founded on 14 July 1949 by the Apostolic Carmel Sisters, Carmel School has shaped generations of learners in Hazaribagh — guided by the motto “Be Pure and True.”

Mother Mary Veronica

Sophie Leeves · 1823 - 1906

Sophie Leeves was born in England to an Anglican Minister. She converted to Catholicism in 1850 and joined religious life in 1851 as Sister Mary Veronica of the Passion of Jesus.

Mother Mary Veronica founded the Apostolic Carmel congregation and established St. Ann's Convent, Mangalore in 1870. Her educational mission now reaches India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Kuwait, Kenya, Italy, Bahrain, Tanzania, France.

From a small school of 37 students in 1949 to a Platinum Jubilee institution in 2024 — these are the moments that made us.

  1. 1949

    School founded with 37 students

    The school was founded following a meeting on March 14th at Rai Sahib S.N. Sahay's residence. Attendees included Mother Theodosia, Mother Sylvia, Fr. E. De meulder S.J, and Mr. Radha Govind Prasad.

  2. 1998

    Class VI English medium opened

    English medium classes began expanding the school's reach

  3. 2003

    First ICSE examination batch

    32 students appeared with 100% pass results

  4. 2004

    CISCE affiliation received

    Provisional ICSE affiliation from Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations

  5. 2007

    Minority status granted

    Minority certificate received from Union Government of India

  6. 2024

    Platinum Jubilee

    75 years of Carmel education in Hazaribagh.
